1 Number and Size of Schools.
(4) Universities and Junior Colleges


As of 1975, there were 420 universities, including 81 national (19.3% of tlae total), 34 local (8.1%) and 305 private (72.6%). Since there were 317 universities in 1965, the number of universities grew by 103 during the last decade. The number of universities with graduate sclnools increased from 131 in 1965 to 213 in 1975, including 66 national, 18 local and 129 private.

Viewing the distribution of the number of universities in 1975, classified by enrollment, as shown in Table 4-7-(1), the number of those with 1,001-5,000 students is the greatest at 205, accounting for about 50% of the total. There were 40 large-sized universities with 10,001 persons and over. These 40 universities represented just 9.5% of all universities but their enrollment accounted for 46.7% of all university students. As compared with 1965, the size of universities may be said to have expanded as a whole.

There were 513 junior colleges as of 1975, including 31 national (6.0% of tje total), 48 local (9.4%) and 434 private (84.6%). Since there were 369 junior colleges in 1965, their number grew by 144 during the last decade.

As for the distribution of junior colleges in 1975, dassified by enrollment, as shown in Table 4-7-(2), those with 201-400 rersons were the most numerous at 126, accounting for about 25% of the total. There were 116 relatively large-sized junior colleges with 1,001 persons and over, which accounted for 22.6% of the total, with their enrollment representing 52.7% of all junior college students. As compared with 1965, the size of junior colleges expanded as a whole, with the number of those with 1,001 persons and over in particular growing from 25 to 116 during the last decade.
