CHAPTER 3 SUFFICIENCY OF TEACHING STAFFAND PROVISION OF SCHOOL FACILITIES
2 Facilities, Teaching Materials, Teaching Equipment and School Environment
(1) Facilities
b. Facilities for Physical Education in Schools

The facilities for physical education in elementary and lower secondary school shave recently been rapidly improved owing in large part to national subsidies, but there is still plenty of room for improvement when they are compared to the ordinary parts of school buildings.

In 1969, 71.2% of local public elementary schools and 78.0% of local public lower secondary schools had gymnasiums, but only 31.3% of the elementary schools and 27.2% of the lower secondary schools had swimming pools. The percent of schools which have swimming pools is much lower than that of schools which have gymnasiums. By 1973 it is anticipated that, all schools with more than300 pupils will have a swimming pool.

Note: Actual numbers are given in Basic Table 57. Basic Table 57

Almost all local public upper secondary schools have a gymnasium, but only27.5% of them has swimming pools. The construction of gyms for judo and kendo (Japanese fencing) and the improvement of illumination in the playgrounds at evening course upper secondary schools are also being undertaken.
