The proportion of compulsory school graduates going on to upper secondary schools increased rapidly from 43% in 1950, the year immediately following the introduction of the new school system, to 55% in 1960 and to 82% in 1970.
Since the percent difference between boys and girls continuing was very large in 1950, the percent of female graduates of compulsory schools going on to upper secondary schools has risen more rapidly than that of male graduates. Since 1969,this percent has been higher than that for boys.
The percent of compulsory school graduates going on to upper secondary schools has shown a marked increase from 1964 to 1970 in all prefectures. In some prefectures, the rate of increase between these years was more than 18%.Nevertheless, differences between prefectures are still large. The difference between the highest and lowest prefectures was 28% in 1970, although this difference smaller than that in 1964.
