PREFACE TO THE ORIGINAL VERSION

Today enthusiasm for education in various countries in the world is high. In Japan efforts have been made for many years to expand and improve education.

Especially in regard to its universality, education inn Japan has already reached a high standard. Socio-economic development, however, has been extensive recently and consequently when the problems raised by such development are taken into account it is obviously necessary to take steps to further improve education.

Therefore, during this Week for Education and Culture it is of significance that we study the facts of education in comparison with other major countries, and make clear the standards of education in our country.

I should be pleased if this book would be useful not only for the educators concerned but also for all of the people so they may comprehend the present situation and consider the future development of our education.
