(2) Enrollment by Major Field of Study

The departments of science, engineering and arts have experienced the greatest relative growth in Japanese universities, with increases of 2.3, 2.5 and 2.7 times respectively in these departments during the period from1954 to 1964.

The increase in enrollment in science and technology departments was influenced greatly by a plan for the admission of increased number of students in universities and colleges, which the Government prepared in 1957 as part of its "Long-term Economic Plan." Under this plan, an increase in 8,COO in science and technology departments was achieved by 1960.

In universities, science and technology departments enrolled 15.4 percent of all students in 1954. By effectuation of this plan to increase admissions to science and technology departments, the percentage of students in those departments showed yearly increase and reached 22.1 per cent in 1964.
