The spread of education may be analysed in both qualitative
and quantitative aspects. This chapter covers the quantitative expansion of education
in Japan, mainly Japan's progress in the field since World War and, in addition,
by comparison of the present stage of the quantitative expansion in Japan with
that in each of the other main foreign countries and, at the same time, of Japan's
efforts in this field for the past few years with the efforts made in each of
the advanced countries. The comparison will be made, in this connection, on the
basis of the indexes of the number of compulsory school years, the percentage
of enrollment in compulsory schools, the percentage of the expansion of upper
secondary and higher education, the structure of population by education received
and so forth.
