In November 1964, the Japanese Ministry of Education published a report entitled "Educational Standards in Japan." This publication was intended to inform the general public of educational standards in this country as compared with other selected countries. It attempted a comparative study of education both in its quantitative and qualitative aspects. The present volume is a complete translation of this report.
In recent years the academic and governmental circles in many foreign countries have focused more attention on education in Japan. There has been great demand for more factual information written in English relating to the educational scene as a whole in this country. In order to meet this demand, this English version of the report has been prepared and published.
It is hoped that this publication will be of use and value for those who are interested in education in Japan.
Grateful acknowledgement is made to the Japanese National Commission for Unesco which cooperated on the translation of this report. Gratitude is also expressed to Mr. Waiter E. Morgan, former Superintendent, Pacific Air Forces Area Dependents Schools, who has reviewed and amended the English expression of this publication.
