Universities and graduate schools should be easier places to learn for adults who want to develop their abilities. What kinds of systems are in place?

More and more universities and graduate schools are carrying out measures such as those listed below, to address the diverse learning demands of adults who want to acquire advanced and up-to-date knowledge and skills.

Special selection procedures for adults

Entrant selection for adult students, based mainly on an essay and interview.

Evening graduate schools, universities and graduate schools with day/evening programs, satellite classes

In order to make it easier for adults, who have time constraints, to attend classes, universities and graduate schools that provide evening classes or both day and evening programs, and satellite classes that provide university and graduate classes at locations other than campuses that are convenient for commuting, have been established.

Special register system

This system allows one to take classes from regular university courses in areas of learning that are of interest, and to earn credits even without formally enrolling.

Graduate school one-year master's course and long-term student courses

Graduate school master's courses made more flexible by shortening or lengthening the terms of study are available to address the diverse learning demands of adults.

Long-term special register student system

This system allows one who has a job or other special circumstance to take classes systematically over a fixed period that is longer than the term of study, and to earn a degree.

Correspondence universities and graduate schools

Universities and graduate schools that offer correspondence education are established to address the learning demands of adults who have difficulty commuting to class due to geographical or time constraints, etc.

Extension courses

Extension courses offer learning opportunities for local residents, etc. to acquire broad knowledge and skills for life and jobs, as well as general education, by disclosing the fruits of education and research directly to society.
