Chapter 4   Higher Education Reform in Other Countries
Section 2   United States

In the US, students continue on to higher education after a 12-year primary and secondary education that begins at age six. Institutions of higher education are roughly divided into four-year universities and two-year colleges.

Higher education in the US achieved expansion early, and has grown to an extremely large scale. At the same time, over the process of this development, a diverse and flexible system has been formed wherein universities and courses of wide-ranging contents and levels have been established, and all universities compete with each other. More than a few countries are using the US' pioneering efforts as a model.

The US federal government, however, as well as states and universities are facing issues regarding today's American universities, which have been forged within this large-scale and multifaceted system. These include securing the financial resources to accompany expansion and guaranteeing higher education for people who are not blessed with learning opportunities.
