   Q11

QUESTION
It seems that university entrance examinations are becoming increasingly diversified. Which direction are university entrance exams going in the future?

Answer
In recent years, universities have been making various efforts to improve their methods of selecting students by examining their abilities and aptitude from various aspects. Further improvements are expected to be made to the methods of selection in the same direction.

Many universities have been diversifying their methods of selecting entrants by introducing, among other things, interviews, essays, proficiency tests and listening tests, together with special selection methods for adult students and children returning from overseas. There has also been a rapid rise in the number of universities that have introduced "admission office" entrance examinations. Under the admission office method, universities announce their admission policies by expressly describing their distinctive ideas of education and avoiding excessive emphasis on scholastic tests, and they accept diverse forms of application documents and have thorough interviews of applicants for the sake of the comprehensive assessment of prospective students' abilities and aptitudes.

Introduction of Multiple Evaluation

As described above, in the wake of changing social conditions such as a decline in the number of children and the rising advancement rate to universities as well as the diversification of upper secondary school education, universities have been improving their methods of selecting entrants by moving away from excessive emphasis on scholastic tests to methods that allow them multiple evaluations of applicants' abilities and aptitudes. From the standpoint of seeking better mutual selections by applicant students and universities, universities are being called upon to continue efforts to further diversify their selection methods and reinforce the multiple evaluation assessment of applicants.
